[...] As well as a great opportunity for Welsh Bloggers to be rewarded for their efforts it’s also a great way for people to know about some fantastic resources on the internet. The list of entrants/nominees have just been listed over on the Welsh Blog Awards website here: http://walesblogawards.co.uk/2010/09/the-longlist/ [...]
We were very surprised to see our blog on the longlist – and intrigued that it ended up misplaced in the ‘Community’ section.
Thank you to whoever nominated us but we would prefer that it was withdrawn.
Thanks for your comment, which blog is yours? Will remove it if you’re sure.

Hi Ed and all at Wales Blog Awards
I’m flattered by the nomination, thank you.
But please could you disqualify me from the “Best Welsh Language Blog” category. I’ve thought about it and I’m not entirely comfortable with being in a special linguistic category. As you’ll recall I’ve commented on this before. Thanks for making me think about it though.
I don’t know if I’m strictly eligible for such a category anyway, I also blog in English and have been experimenting with other languages of late. I’m not saying it’s the way to go or anything, it’s just my idea of fun.
Anything that promotes excellence in blogging in Wales has to be a good thing and I salute you. All the best with the event.
I’m delighted that my blog, Waste Goddess has been longlisted. What a fabulous selection of blogs to discover and enjoy.
Nice! I have been Nominated, thanks to whoever did so. Look forward to the event next month! =]
A lot of these blogs are out of date, not updated for months or even years. Makes winning this award a bit of a hollow victory.

Hi Carl,
Thanks for your comment. No problem, was great to see you nominated. Do you want us to remove you from the longlist or just not consider you for the shortlist?
Ed
I wouldn’t put it as blunt as Simon, but it’s a damn poor show that a post on something called ‘The Wales Blog Awards’ is deleted because it is in Welsh.
This is supposed to be the cutting edge of technology & if you guys haven’t got systems in place to deal with Welsh language posts other than deleting them then it’s quite pathetic really.
Back to the drawing board..
Just to clarify, Simon Dyda does not represent “all Welsh speakers”.
@Simon, while the Welsh Blog Awards 2010 is far from perfect, there’s no need to be abusive, and also had you not deleted the blog for the 2007 awards in the first place (why, Blogger doesn’t charge for hosting?), the organisers might have been able to see how well it worked having Welsh, English and other language blogs side by side.
@Simon – sorted the comment issue, unfortunately it had gone into the spam folder. Sorry about that.
…had you not deleted the blog for the 2007 awards in the first place (why, Blogger doesn’t charge for hosting?)…
Three words: Google Customer Service.
I see Simon’s crass comment of yesterday has been removed. Effectively he was complaining of the feeling that a category of Best Welsh-Language Blog is tokenism. Blogs of all different focus are written in Welsh, just as they are in English or Spanish or whatever language the author chooses. So, having all of them looped into a category based on medium rather than message leaves some Welsh-language bloggers feeling a bit like the Jewish kid during the school’s Christmas pageant: thousands of years of culture and history politely asked to sit quietly in the back of the room.
But, admittedly, if you start to break down Welsh-language blogs into categories the herd grows rather thin. Especially if one of your categories is “blogs updated more than once every six months.” So, blogs would win their categories by way of being the only one in that category.
Perhaps it would make sense to simply put the Welsh-language blogs in against the English ones. But I personally do like the idea of drawing special attention to the fact that people are blogging in Welsh. I think many people in Wales see Welsh as a boring thing they had to learn in school, or as an extension of nationalistic feeling, and so don’t really imagine it as being the sort of thing a “normal” person uses to communicate what they are thinking, feeling, loving, hoping, etc.
My blog has been longlisted in the Welsh-language category. But were I to win (an increasingly likely prospect given that some have asked they not be considered), could I really say that my Pugnacious Little Trolls is better than FideoBobDydd? Both are super-awesome blogs, but for widely different reasons.
Still, it’s nice to be noticed. Those of us blogging in Welsh often feel a little lonely. And while an award for Welsh-language blog is perhaps too broad a brush, the attention is good for those putting so much effort into blogging yn y Gymraeg. Welsh-language icon Saunders Lewis once said there are only two reasons for a person to write: for money or for recognition. It’s likely, then, that if Saunders were alive today he wouldn’t have a blog.
@Chris Cope – Thanks for your considered comment. It’s something we will definitely look at taking the awards forward. I think, as a lot of people have noticed, the blogs are about a celebration of blogging in Wales rather than about the winning. To use the old adage, “it’s the taking part that counts”.
We’ll definitely be looking for people’s input on how the Welsh-language blogs are looked at next year, and you’ve given some food for thought in your comment. Thank you.
Thanks for the “best-writing” long list mention, and good luck to everyone.
